Six Patterns That Indicate a Problem
If you recognize any of these in yourself or someone close to you, gambling has stopped being recreation. The earlier you address it, the easier it is to course-correct. Call 1-800-GAMBLER without waiting for "rock bottom"; rock bottom is not required to get help.
Chasing Losses
Increasing your bet sizes after losing in an attempt to "win back" what you lost. This is the single strongest predictor of problem gambling.
Betting Money You Cannot Afford
Using rent money, grocery money, credit cards, or borrowed funds to place wagers. If a loss would create financial hardship, the bet is too large.
Spending More Time Than Planned
Sessions running hours longer than intended. Skipping work, family obligations, or sleep to keep betting.
Hiding Activity
Concealing the extent of your betting from family or partners. Lying about how much you have won or lost.
Anxiety or Depression
Feeling restless or irritable when not betting. Mood swings tied to wins and losses. Using betting to escape stress or other negative feelings.
Failed Quit Attempts
Trying to stop or cut back and being unable to. Promising yourself "just one more bet" repeatedly.
Responsible Gambling Tools at Kentucky Sportsbooks
Every licensed Kentucky sportsbook is required by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission to provide these tools. They are in Account Settings > Responsible Gambling at every operator. Use them.
Deposit Limits
Every licensed Kentucky sportsbook supports daily, weekly, and monthly deposit limits. Set these inside your account settings. Once set, you cannot raise them immediately; a cool-off period applies (typically 24-72 hours).
Wager Limits
Per-bet or per-session wager caps. Useful for keeping individual bets within your bankroll. Available at FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, and others.
Time Limits
Session-time caps. After your set duration, the app prompts you to take a break or logs you out automatically.
Cool-Off Periods
Temporary self-imposed pauses (24 hours, 7 days, 30 days). The account is suspended for the duration; you cannot deposit, wager, or unlock early.
Self-Exclusion
Long-term or permanent exclusion from the sportsbook. Once self-excluded, accounts are closed and the operator is required to block re-registration attempts for the exclusion period (commonly 6 months, 1 year, 5 years, or lifetime).
KY Statewide Self-Exclusion
The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission maintains a statewide voluntary self-exclusion program covering all licensed Kentucky sportsbooks simultaneously. Enrollment is a single application; all licensed operators are required to enforce. Contact KYHRC or KYCPG.org for enrollment information.
Six Habits of Bettors Who Stay in Control
Set a Budget Before You Start
Decide how much you can afford to lose before opening an app. Treat the wagering budget like entertainment spending (concert tickets, dinner out), not investment capital.
Bet Only What You Can Afford to Lose
Never use money set aside for rent, utilities, food, or debt service. If losing the wager would create financial hardship, the bet is too large.
Use Bonus Bets Strategically
Welcome bonuses and bonus bets are valuable, but only if you would have been betting anyway. Do not let "free" bonus bets pull you into placing wagers you would not otherwise make.
Track Your Wins and Losses
Most Kentucky sportsbooks include bet-history exports. Review your monthly P&L honestly. Many bettors discover they are losing far more than they realized once they actually look at the numbers.
Take Breaks
Step away from your phone for stretches. Use the in-app session reminders. Tilt (emotional decision-making after a bad beat) costs more bettors more money than skill differential ever does.
Never Bet Under the Influence
Alcohol and gambling are a dangerous mix. Most documented problem gambling escalation occurs during impaired sessions. If you would not bet sober, do not bet drunk.
Responsible Gambling FAQ
What is the Kentucky problem gambling helpline?
The primary national helpline serving Kentucky is 1-800-GAMBLER (1-800-426-2537), available 24/7 free and confidential. Kentucky-specific resources, including a treatment provider directory and family support information, are at KYCPG.org (Kentucky Council on Problem Gambling).
How do I self-exclude from Kentucky sportsbooks?
You have two options. Within a single sportsbook: open the app, go to Account Settings > Responsible Gambling > Self-Exclusion, choose your duration (24 hours through lifetime), and confirm. For all Kentucky sportsbooks simultaneously: enroll in the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission's statewide voluntary self-exclusion program via KYHRC or KYCPG.org. Statewide exclusion is enforced across every licensed Kentucky operator.
Can I get my money back after self-exclusion?
Yes. Your remaining account balance is returned to you when you self-exclude. The sportsbook processes withdrawals according to standard procedures before closing the account. Pending bonus bets are typically forfeited upon self-exclusion; consult your operator's specific responsible gambling terms.
Is online gambling addictive?
For most adults, sports betting is recreation that does not develop into a problem. For a meaningful minority (estimates range from 1% to 4% of regular gamblers), gambling can become addictive in a way that meets clinical criteria for gambling disorder. Warning signs include chasing losses, betting more than intended, hiding activity from loved ones, and failed attempts to quit. If you recognize any of these patterns in yourself or someone you know, contact 1-800-GAMBLER or KYCPG.org.
What is the minimum age to bet in Kentucky?
The legal sports betting age in Kentucky is 18 by state law. However, several sportsbooks operating in Kentucky (FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars among others) voluntarily require users to be 21+ as part of their own corporate responsible-gambling policies. Legislation passed in April 2026 may raise the minimum to 21 statewide.
Are responsible gambling tools required by Kentucky law?
Yes. Every licensed Kentucky sportsbook is required by Kentucky Horse Racing Commission regulation to provide deposit limits, time limits, cool-off periods, and self-exclusion options. Operators are also required to display 1-800-GAMBLER prominently and to train customer support staff on responsible gambling escalation procedures.
Can family members request a third-party exclusion?
In some cases yes. Concerned family members can contact KYCPG.org or the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission to discuss third-party self-exclusion requests. The process requires documentation and is reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The simpler path is encouraging the affected person to self-enroll voluntarily.
What if I cannot pay debts from gambling losses?
Speak with a licensed financial counselor and a problem-gambling specialist as soon as possible. KYCPG.org maintains a directory of Kentucky-based counselors who specialize in gambling-related financial recovery. Gambling debts are typically dischargeable in bankruptcy, but the underlying behavior must be addressed; otherwise the cycle repeats. Do not attempt to "win back" debt through more gambling; this is the path that produces the worst outcomes.
